Internationellt pressmeddelande:
More than half of men worry their partner will forget The Pill
(Oss, The Netherlands): Over half of men worry that their partner might forget to take the Pill, and a similar proportion say they remind her to take it, according to new results from an international survey involving more than 4000 men. The findings show that Spanish men worry the most (80%) followed by the French, German and Swiss; while Swedish and Danish men were less likely to worry (36% in both countries).
The findings have emerged from the Contraceptive Confidence and Consequences Survey. The survey conducted earlier this year by TNS-NIPO [1] questioned over 8500 men and women between the ages of 16 and 40 about contraception [2]. It follows a previous survey showing that one in five pill users miss at least one pill every month [3].
The new findings also show that men’s awareness of newer – easy-to-remember – contraceptive options available today is relatively low. Although nearly all men were familiar with the Pill, only 29% of men were aware of the contraceptive ring - a recently-introduced method that is as reliable as the Pill but is only used once a month.
Other findings revealed in the new survey show that men think they exert the greatest influence on women in terms of the choice of hormonal contraception. In reality, women say that their doctor and girlfriends have more influence, although nearly three-quarters of women in the survey said that they viewed the choice of contraception as a mutual decision.
“Men’s concerns about missed pills are not unfounded – missing just one pill can compromise its reliability and lead to an unplanned pregnancy,” said Sanderijn van der Doef, psychologist / sexologist, Netherlands Institute for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. “But if men really want to increase their influence on women, they would do well to be better informed about the range of contraceptives available. The choice of contraception can impact both partners’ lives and it makes sense for both parties to fully understand all the options available to them as a couple.”
She suggested that men who worry about their partner missing the Pill should find out more about the alternative non-daily options available and discuss these with their partner. She added: “One ideal alternative is the contraceptive ring - it only requires action once a month rather than daily, is as reliable as the Pill and does not require any action at the time of love-making.”
Other interesting findings from the survey include:
- No disturbance during love-making’ is first runner up to reliability when it comes to what men want from their contraception.
- 65% of men assume their partner will always tell them if the reliability of the contraceptive is decreased, yet only 35% of women say they do.
- Half of men continued to have sexual intercourse when they knew the reliability of the Pill was decreased; and 75% did not always take additional precautions.
- 40% of men whose partner uses the Pill have experienced a pregnancy scare, most usually as a result of missed or late pill. Most men took joint responsibility for the scare with only 14% saying responsibility lies solely with their partner.
- Nearly three out of five men (59%) who had experienced a pregnancy scare said it had a negative impact on their emotional life rising to 67% among men who said their career was very important to them.
